Here are some of the sports I've enjoyed participating in for the last several years, and some recreational activities I do in my free time.
I started cross country in 6th grade. I already knew I liked to run and that I was at least somewhat capable. I did the bare necessary required to improve but I didn't understand at the time the concept of going past your limits. When I got tired or got a cramp I would slow down or even stop and walk. I had a good middle school experience but I only scratched the surface of what the sport could be for me. In High school everything changed, I joined an awesome team that was actually competitive with a great coach. During my first season I dropped 5 minutes and went from one of our slowest to the 3rd fastest on the team. I went on to win most improved for our varsity boy's team my Junior and Senior year. Cross country will always be my favorite high school experience because the whole team formed a tight bond of friendship that made our time together unforgettable.
For my sophomore year the descision was made to transfer form my public school to a nearby small classical school. My freshman year we were online using zoom the entire year which is a poor excuse for quality education. Because it hadn't yet been determined what the public schools would decide for the next year we decided to go to a school we could be assured would be in-person. The high school consisting of about 40 kids was too small to support many of the programs I enjoyed back at my public school. Therefore, when the new principal decided to start a baseball team in the spring I hopped at the opportunity even though I had no experience. Even though our team hardly won any games I loved learning the sport and hanging out with friends on the team.
I first started track and field in middle school but like cross country it wasn't till high school that I actually applied myself to the sport. In high school the coaching staff was headed by our cross country coach and the practices for the mid to long distance runners weren't very different from what we did in the fall cross country season. I enjoyed running mainly the 400, 800, and 1600 meter events and surprised myself the first year with my improvement. Many of the mid distance and long distance runners were from the cross country team and would practice together. I couldn't have asked for a better group of friends and many hot days would find us swimming and laughing in a local lake or playing ultimate frisbee after our run.
Having a somewhat large family I enjoy big family reunions over the summer. A cousin of mine started taking his wake boat to these reunions and taught anyone who wanted to learn how to wake board. Since then it's become a favorite activity of mine.
I've always had in interest in the natural world and it's creatures. Over the past few years I've eased my way into hunting. I've enjoyed learning from a family friend and experienced hunter who helped mentor me in the craft. Although I have little experience I've enjoyed trying it out and enjoy eating what I catch even more.
