I've pursued a few different musical hobbies to occupy my time. At school, church, and elsewhere I've spent several years learning how to sing and play a few instruments.
I'm lucky enough to have attended a public school with a very strong music program. I joined choir in 6th grade and have continued throughout middle and high school. I now sing as a bass in our High school Intermediate Concert choir.
One of the optional activities I pursued through my school choir was the MSVMA solo and ensemble. High school students can choose to form a small group or give a solo performance. As a soloist you prepare two songs with an instructor or voice teacher and then sing them in front of an adjudicator at a district event receiving advice and a rating. A judge's score will fall into one of four different divisions (1 being the best), I received a division two for my performance.
I started out my band experience in 6th grade beginning on trumpet and transferring to tuba for 7th and 8th grade. Throughout high school I marched sousaphone for the fall season and played tuba for our concert band the rest of the year. Later in high school I became a section leader and helped lead the Low brass instruments during the marching band season.
In my junior year of high school I performed a tuba solo for the MSBOA. I earned a division I rating at district solo and ensemble making me eligible for the state competition. I then performed my solo and proficiency I at state solo and ensemble and received a division II rating.
Since joining the Orthodox church at the age of 9 I've been enamored with the liturgical music. I started singing in the choir at the Russian orthodox church we started out attending. After a few years I started to make some progress and grew as a singer but still wasn't capable without depending on a competent singer to guide me. In the past two years my family started attending an Antiochian Orthodox church and I continue to sing with the choir there. I was mentored by one of the experienced bass singers and can now competently navigate my way through the typical songs in the divine liturgy. I'm still learning and growing my voice but love singing or chanting at every church service I am able to attend.
